چکیده

this study focused on use of bacterial extracellular enzyme activities as biochemical parameters, along with the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics, in a comprehensive assessment of water quality of four lake ecosystems in the province of vojvodina (northern serbia): provala, ludas, zobnatica and palic. water samples were collected in june and october, 2008. for assessment of microbiological water quality, heterotrophic plate count, total and fecal coliform count, as well as total bacterial count was determined. based on microbiological parameters, the water ecosystems were appropriately classified. the following extracellular enzyme activities were determined: alkaline phosphatase, β-d-glucosidase and acetate esterase using fluorogenic 4-methylumbelliferone labeled substrates. the results showed that provala lake had the best water quality taking in consideration all of the parameters, followed by zobnatica, while ludas and palic had a significant level of organic water pollution both in june and october. the results indicate that further similar studies should include both microbiological and biochemical analyses, in order to obtain more relevant data on water quality.

Assessment of water quality in Blinaja River Basin (Kosovo) using the Canadian Water Quality Index (WQI)

Kosovo has limited natural water resources which should be well managed. This is recently realised through quantitative and qualitative monitoring of both surface and groundwater and by characterizing their quality according to their destination. In this paper, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Environment Ministers (CCME WQI) was applied to evaluate the groundw...

cyanobacterial blooms and their toxicity in vojvodina lakes, serbia

the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a significant indicator of water quality, having in mind that several genera have the quality of producing cyanotoxins, which are harmful to animals, plants and humans. seven lakes in vojvodina (republic of serbia) were examined in may and september 2007 for cyanobacterial presence and cyanotoxins content, chl a concentration and index of phosph...

A Statistical Examination of Water Quality in Two Iowa Lakes

Water quality has become and important issue in the state of Iowa as well as across the entire United States. Two Iowa Lakes, Silver Lake and Casey Lake were chosen for study by a team of biologists, chemists, earth scientists and statisticians from the University of Northern Iowa. Our goals are to statistically compare the water quality in the two lakes in each year and examine whether or not ...

Assessment of water quality due to Wolfram mining in Portugal

Water has an important role in creating pollution problems in the mining regimes influencing the surrounding surface environment. The purpose of this study is to make an assessment of groundwater quality in an underground mine site in Portugal with a view of determining the pollution potential of groundwater. In the corresponding surface area of this underground mine, intersec...

The role of faecal coliforms in water quality assessment

The paper aims to evaluate the role of faecal coliforms in assessment of water quality. The study was conducted on the Neretva River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The sampling was performed bimonthly, over 12 months at seven selected sites. APHA (1995) methods were used. The raw data of temperature, pH, conductivity, oxygen saturation, nitrogen, total phosphorus, and faecal coliforms were transfor...
